All I can really say is this horse has put me through hell and back; and she’s caused me more emotional and psychical pain then any horse has ever had. Why have I kept her? I have no idea, but probably because I love her too much to let go. Today though, we celebrate two years together. I got Dixie as a 10 year old, who didn’t really know what she was getting herself into. I thought she could guide me up the levels, but it ended it took me over a year to guide her calmly through a 2ft course. Today I’ll cherish the good memories with her, and remind myself that I’ve learned from the many bad ones. And boy can I say, the past two years have been full of bad ones, but I wouldn’t trade the time we had together for anything; this horse has taught me so much. I learned how to sit bucking fits, how to stay on when she’d catapult literally 4 feet over a cross rail, and deal with bolts like they were nothing but a little extension to the trot, and not a full out gallop.
I’m not going to say our journey has been completely enjoyable for me; Dixie was the spazziest, spookiest, most hot-headed horse I’d ever ridden. She was never bomb proofed, her breaks were barely there, but we learned together. And aside from what she taught me riding wise, I got taught bravery, dedication, patience, perseverance, and more. At times, I admit it, I definitely got jealous, and it was hard for me not too. Everyone else was moving up on their amazing horses, winning a ton, and it was hard for me. All I wanted was to be as good as them, and I’m still really not. I’ve been stuck at the same level for the past 3 years, and it’s getting frustrating.
Last summer, things were really taking a turn for the best, but then in October, Dixie got injured. 5 months stall rest, and more months to rehab. That time was really frustrating as well, I spent a lot of time with her, but it seemed like everything I had worked for had fallen apart. She’s now back to work, and we’ve had our troubles. A lot of the time, I just really don’t want to continue, I don’t know how much she can take since she was injured, and I’m confused.. but at the end of the day, I had to thank Dixie for everything. She’s taught me nearly everything I know about riding, and I can never repay her for that.
Dixie, I love you. You are my life, my everything, and I’d ever want to let you go.Thank you ♥
